The most popular lead-free bismuth-containing alloy solders super low temp solder wire are 281 (Sn42Bi58) with a melting point of 138°C, and 282 (Sn42 Ag1 Bi57) with a melting point of 140°C. Adding 1% silver enhances the malleability of the alloy. Both alloys can be used in multiple welding processes. Bismuth alloys can be used for soldering after the initial solder joint is formed in standard SAC alloys (220°C). The bonding properties of 281 and 282 are similar to those of tin-lead solder, with excellent fatigue strength and copper dissolution characteristics. Of all metals, bismuth has the best diamagnetic properties and the lowest thermal conductivity. Besides being non-toxic, bismuth does not oxidize as easily as lead.
